Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya and his devolution counterpart Eugene Wamalwa will join Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong in the launch of Bt Cotton farming in the County on Monday, at Alupe University grounds.
Revitalization of Bt Cotton production with certified seeds will herald a new chapter as the County Government also embarks on reviving cotton ginneries which stalled in the 1990s, thus denying farmers their livelihood.
The idea to introduce new cotton variety in the country was mooted by the Governor after his tour of India.
His dream to have Bt cotton variety introduced in the county bore fruits in December last year when the Cabinet approved commercial farming of Bt Cotton, with effect from this month.
The approval came after successful completion of field trials that were conducted over a period of five years.
Bt cotton is a genetically modified pest resistant plant cotton variety, which produces an insecticide to combat bollworm.
Cotton production has remained very low due to numerous challenges in the country, key among them being pests and low-quality seed.
Introduction of Bt cotton will address some of these challenges because Bt cotton has an inbuilt mechanism to deal with pests.
