Water PS Joseph Irungu has called on the National Development Implementation Technical Committee (NDITC) to allocate more money to the Galana Kulalu food security project.
The NDITC is chaired by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho.
The PS was speaking in Galana while on a tour of the project.
He said the project sits on 1.75 Million acres of land of which 1. 3M acres are arable.
The project was expected to be completed in the year 2018 but it ran into a myriad of challenges associated with the contractor hence delay in its completion date.
“Due to its immense potential of becoming a food basket in the country, the Ministry took up its implementation through the National Irrigation Authority and currently 5,149 acres are cropped with maize with an average yield of 20 (90Kg) per acre,” Irungu said.
He said the Government targets to irrigate 20,000 acres where maize, pineapples, cashew nuts, bananas and other vegetables will be grown.
A total of 8 PS’s were present.
They included Hamadi Boga PS Crops and Research Development, Chris Kiptoo PS Environment, Julius Muia PS Treasury, Ambassador Macharia Kamau PS Foreign affairs, Joseph Njoroge PS Energy, Micah Powon PS ASAL and the Secretary, Presidential Delivery Unit Andrew Wakahiu.
The tour was led Interior PS Karanja Kibicho .
The aim was for the adhoc subcommittee of NDITC to understand the challenges facing the project so that the government can provide lasting solutions.
The Galana Kulalu Food Security Project is a flagship project located in Kilifi and Tana River Counties that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2014.
