Residents of Bondeni in Athi River, Machakos County on Friday held a protest over an open construction pit that has been left open by a private developer.
The pit was dug by a private developer along the Athi River –Kitengela road.
It was dug five years ago and is full.
The residents said the pit is full of mosquitoes which are causing Malaria to the area residents.
They said a foul smell emanates from the pit.
“Some people throw dead animals here. Some children have also disappeared without trace and we suspect they drowned in the pit,” said Mark Macharia a resident.
They said NEMA officials have not addressed their concerns despite numerous reminders.
The residents said it’s difficult to do business along the road because of the foul smell from the pit.
They called on Governor Wavinya Ndeti to intervene and have the developer fill up the pit.
The residents gave out a 7-day ultimatum or else they take the law into their own hands.
