Kakamega women representative Elsie Muhanda has pledged her support to the Boda boda Industry in the county.
She said the industry is the largest employer of young people.
Muhanda said boda bodas can positively contribute to the growth of the economy if well harnessed.
While addressing hundreds of Bodaboda operators in Kakamega, the MP said through the Kakamega County Maendeleo (KACOMA) SACCO, which is her flagship program, she will partner with the riders’ to enable them have access to low-interest rates while taking loans to buy Motor Bikes.
“Transport is one of the leading industries in Kakamega County and a lead employer of young people, so as a Mother who is concerned about her children, I wish to make it easier for the young people to buy Motor Cycles and be able to repay for them without undue pressure like other financial institutions.” She said.
The Kacoma Sacco has introduced Bodaboda Loan, a product for members who have interests in owning a motorbike for use as a boda boda.
According to the SACCO officials, this product will enable interested members to access motorbikes as they service the loans on monthly basis.
Muhanda asked the society to change its perception about boda boda riders.
She said most of the riders are perceived as criminals yet they are not.
The SACCO intends to give the members a loan which attracts a low-interest rate of 1% as opposed to other SACCOS.
Currently, the SACCO has over 15,000 active members drawn from the 12 Sub Counties of Kakamega.
Kakamega’s 12 Sub Counties are, Lurambi, Shinyalu, Ikolomani, Khwisero, Butere, Matungu, Mumias East, Mumias West, Malava, Navakholo, Lugari, and Likuyani.
