Traders at Kenyan borders want the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to increase circulation of the new currency to restore the Kenyan shillings value against other currencies.
Yesterday, traders in Busia said the Kenyan shilling is losing its value against the Ugandan one.
Traders at the border claim the Kenya shilling which has been exchanging at 37 units of the Uganda shilling, now trades at 32 units.
Speaking during a workshop on gender issues at Hotel Itoya on Tuesday in Busia town, the Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi said the issue of new notes is posing a big challenge due to limited supply.
He said money changers in Uganda were taking advantage of the shortage to fleece Kenyans by reducing exchange rates.
He lamented that most Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) still disburse old currencies, thus worsening the situation.
Busia Women Cross Border Traders Sacco secretary Edna Mudibo had raised concerns over the low exchange rates for the new notes which had made Ugandan money changers make a kill.
