The Catholic Church in Tharaka Nithi County says it is kicking off a campaign against family planning.
Speaking last Saturday, Father Gerald Mugendi popularly known as Kiroria – prophet- of Iruma Parish, advised women of child bearing age to discard artificial birth control.
“Classrooms are empty and the future of our church is bleak due to shortage of children”, the cleric said to an amused gathering of Catholic Women Association at the Muthambi Catholic Church, Maara Constituency, Tharaka Nithi County.
Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki who is on record for encouraging women to bear more children supported the announcement!
Governor Muthomi Njuki pledged to equip maternity facilities in readiness for what he said was an expected “baby boom”.
He said women should get at least 5 children and not the two they are getting.
The Catholic Church worldwide is strongly opposed to the use of any forms of contraceptives especially condoms.
However, condoms have been reported to have led to a decline in the spread of HIV/AIDS.
In late February, the Catholic Church reportedly declined to conduct a requiem mass for human rights activist Caroline Mwatha.
Postmortem report revealed she died while procuring an abortion.
The mother of three was five months pregnant at time of her death.
The Catholic Church is opposed to termination of pregnancy unless medically advised.
Both Caroline and her parents are staunch members of the Catholic faith.
However, several people took to social media to express their amusement.

Kipkogei Agui I support. Family planning is causing havoc in marriages… The consequences are too much to bear.
Kipkogei Agui There are women who can’t conceive because their hormones were permanently ‘destroyed’ by birth control pills and injections.
Ken M’ndubi I honestly think as a region we need to increase the number of children per couple, Lets multiply and fill the county. Certainly I know most of these kids will vote in town or diaspora but we need to be careful not to be extinct……
