Luo Nyanza leaders are up in arms against some of their Governors whom they have accused of embezzling County funds, doing little development, and abandoning the residents.
The leaders were reacting to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech om Madaraka day.
In his speech, Uhuru said, “At the County Level, we have allocated ksh.2.3 Trillion to counties. This is equivalent to about 16% of our current GDP. What this means is that we have sent to the counties the equivalent of what our National Cake was between 1885 when the colonizers came to Kenya and when President Moi retired in 2002. We have achieved this in a mere 7 years,” he said.
The leaders led by Bondo Youth Caucus Forum chairman Abraham Onyango said the Governors led by Kisumu’s Anyang’ Nyong’o have underperformed.
“Nyong’o has done little for the residents of Kisumu. As the president said, the National Government has allocated millions of cash to Counties, but the county governments have done little,” Onyango said.
Siaya residents were also angry that the Madaraka day fete took place without the Lwanda -Siaya road being fixed.
They said the road is in a deplorable state, yet the local leaders were doing little to have it fixed.
They also complained that for one week to the Madaraka day fete, they have gone without water.
“Why did they disrupt water, that was unfair” lamented Philip Ohaga a local from Gem.
Kisumu residents also complained that their businesses have been demolished to pave way for the rehabilitation of the Railway Line.
“We signed 25-year-old leases with the government. They never gave us options and went ahead to demolish our business premises. This government is insensitive,” said Peter Obado.
In protests, the locals gave Deputy President William Ruto a rousing welcome in Kisumu’s Kondele slums.
Ruto was cheered wildly by the crowd.
“We are happy with Hustler coming to Kisumu. If elections are called today, we will vote Ruto’s candidates into office,” Obado said.
