Mandera South MP Adan Haji Ali has called on Safaricom Foundation to assist in food donations following the ravaging drought in Northern Kenya.
The MP said lack of food has been caused by little rainfall and loss of jobs due to Covid-19 pandemic.
He said 80 percent of Mandera’s population which is 260,000 residents relies on food aid for survival.
According to Aid agencies including the Red Cross, many children are suffering from malnutrition.
” Several schools have closed, there is no water for livestock and many animals have died, for the remaining animals, the owners are forced to sell them at throw away prices,” he said.
The MP has written to the Chairman, Safaricom Foundation Joseph Ogutu seeking the Telcos help.
In the letter, the MP said the drought has led to a humanitarian crisis and conflict as herders move to people’s land in search of pasture.
The Kenya Food Steering Group announced last month that many Kenyans are threatened by food insecurity which was projected to persist until December.
The Group urged for mitigation measures to be put in place to avert deaths.
According to the National Drought Management Authority, 1.3 million Kenyans have been affected by the drought.
However, several other parts of the Country are receiving heavy rains.
