The annual Matayos cultural and sports festivals ended on Friday at Mundika Primary School.
Women produced a major upset, pulling their male counterparts 2-1 in a do or die tug of war contest to the chagrin of the losers.
The confident men who agreed to field 10 players against 12 women won the first round with ease, forcing them to rest two players and allowing the women to retain the same number of players.
The move worked against them as the determined women made it 1-1 before pulling off a killer pull in the decisive round to bury their male counterparts under the scorching sand.
“Men of Busia should eat well to match our prowess. We take soup and other delicacies, even if you field 20 players against ours two, we shall reduce you to size,” said Lilian Achieno.
Ms Anne Nabwire said women have what it takes to raise the economy of the county if Members of Parliament will empower them.
“We urge the area MP to empower us,” she said.
In men’s football, Busia Sugar FC from Matayos South Ward lifted the title after beating Bukhayo West 3-0 in the finals to successfully retain the title they won last year.
Conrad Ouma scored a brace in the 37th and 46th minutes before Shadrack Ayuya struck a sublime third goal to seal the fate of Bukhayo West.
Bukhayo West had thrashed Mayende 3-1 in the semifinals with Busia Suhar besting Brumba 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
In the women’s category, Nasewa beat Busia Girls 1-0 to capture the crown with the lone goal coming from Kenya Youth Inter-counties Sports Association (KYISA) player Gentrix Kuyudi in the first half.
The winners and runners up in both men and women’s categories received a trophy, uniforms, a ball and cash award.
In the first semis Matayos South hammered Bukhayo West 7-0 with Gentrix Kuyudi scoring five goals.
Burumba beat Mayenje 4-2 in the other semis.
In the 50 kilometers bicycle race, Josephat Okoth emerged winner to take home a new bicycle.
Moses Mukende finished second to be contented with a bicycle frame while David Osore took third position.
In the 30km people with disability category, Anderson Oduory took the top prize with Michael Juma snd Bernard Okumu coming in second and third positions respectively.
