Interior CS Fred Matiangi and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai have ordered the Chief Firearm Licensing officer to revoke the firearm certificates of all Nairobi MCAs who are licensed gun holders.
The CS cited misuse of firearms after chaos erupted on Tuesday at the Assembly and a civilian reportedly opened fire.
During an impromptu visit at the Nairobi City County Assembly on Thursday, Mating’i ordered all MCAs with firearms to surrender them within 24hrs.
He said those MCAs who will fail, will be arrested, and arraigned in court on Monday.
He was accompanied by NMS Director General Mohamed Badi.
“We know those who have the firearms and we are ready to fish them out if they don’t surrender them, “he said.
He was received by Senior Clerk Assistants at the Assembly.
He visited the Assembly to review the damage caused when chaos erupted between warring factions of MCAs on Tuesday.
The CS ordered Nairobi Regional Commissioner Wilson Njega to ensure there are police officers permanently stationed at the Assembly to ensure chaos do not erupt again.
Five minutes after the delegation left, the former Clerk Jacob Ngwele and some MCAs led by Antony Kiragu and Mark Ndungu attempted to access the Assembly precincts.
They were turned away by police.
They held a press brief outside the Assembly in total defiance of the orders given by CS Matiangi and were immediately dispersed when a teargas cannister was hurled at them.
