Most City residents are avoiding taking meat days after an NTV expose dubbed red alert.
In the expose on Sunday evening, it was revealed that most retail outlets that sell and supply meat are lacing meat with Sodium Metabisulfite.
If used in excess, the substance is harmful to the human body.
On Monday the government through the health Ministry started testing meat samples if they have samples of Sodium Metabisulfite.
Health CS Sicily Kariuki confirmed that indeed the chemical Sodium Metabisulfite used in food preservation is a food additive permitted for use in specified food categories.
All county public health departments have been directed to undertake heightened surveillance in all supermarkets, butcheries, meat processors and other food operators to ascertain any presence of additives not permitted for use in meat and meat products.
Naivas Supermarket called a press conference on Tuesday and assured the public that its meat is safe.
Carrefour Supermarkets also issued a statement saying its meat and other products meet international standards.
