Treasury CS Henry Rotich and PS Kamau Thuge will spend the night in police custody after they were arrested over Kimwarer and Arror dam’s scam.
This is before they are arraigned in court on Tuesday.
DPP Nordin Haji on Monday said senior government officials flouted procurement rules and committed illegalities in the Arror and Kimwarer dams’ scandal.
A total of 28 officials and entities are to be charged.
By the time of going to press, Rotich was still recording a statement at the DCI.
Local media reports indicated that President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to announce an acting Treasury Cabinet Secretary later on Monday.
The President is also expected to name an acting Treasury PS in line with his declaration during the State of the Nation address in April.
Rotich’s arrest was big news to all the Local and International news outlets.
Qatar based Aljazeera TV reported that Rotich is the first sitting Kenyan Minister/ Cabinet secretary to be arrested.
The Station went on to say that Kenya has a “terrible reputation for corruption”.
Also to be arrested are employees of Italian firm CMC Di Ravena.
The TV station reported that the Dams were to be constructed at a cost of 630 million dollars and that the amount was overpaid by 170 million dollars.
According to the International media, Kenya has a public debt of 400 billion dollars and that 30 percent of public expenditure is lost to corruption.
While ordering the DCI to arrest Rotich, Thuge and others, DPP Nordin Haji said “Kenya took a loan. The loan attracted interest. We took another loan to pay the interest and the second loan is also attracting interest,”
