Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa has insisted that there is no Kenyan who has directly died from hunger in Turkana and Baringo Counties.
However reports from several correspondents in Turkana and Baringo indicate that several people have died as a result of the ongoing drought.
The residents do not have water and last week, Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok appealed for help from the National government and well wishers.
In an interview with citizen TV on Tuesday night, Wamalwa said the reports are false and are fuelled by politicians who have not been able to identify those who have died from hunger related illness.
The CS said it is not in order to declare hunger a national disaster as called by Senators because the situation is at alert stage.
“Hunger can only be declared a national disaster after the alarm stage but currently we are at the alert stage, our experts are still assessing the situation and will establish how the situation is before the government takes another step,” he said.
He added that the National government had asked the county Governments to set aside emergency funds to cater for such emergencies.
“We come in as the National Government after the Governors have informed us over the same; we are there just to complement what the county Governments are doing to contain the situation”.
Wamalwa said the politicians alleging that people have died from hunger are unable to give names of those who have died and the villages they come from.
According to Hot News correspondent, last week, an old man reportedly died of hunger in Elelea village, Kerio, Turkana central after starving for four days.
Yesterday, social media users took a swipe at deputy president William Ruto who said no one has died of hunger in Turkana and Baringo Counties.
In 2011, the then Government spokesman Alfred Mutua who is now Machakos governor also said no one had died of hunger in Turkana yet several people had died.
His remarks drew nationwide condemnation
