There was drama at the Bomas of Kenya during the the BBI report launch.
Deputy President William Ruto tore into the report by highlighting issues he said were contentious.
He said the issue of picking a Judiciary ombudsman by the President will undermine the independence of the Judiciary.
Ruto said the Powerful President can decide to pick his Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and all other key leaders from one region thus undermining national unity.
He said he agreed with Bishop David Oginde that ODM leader Raila Odinga should tone down and “stop reggae” and that he himself should stop the “hustler narrative.”
“I should be persuaded otherwise. How will this document ensure inclusivity?” he said.
He criticized Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka who said he had already read the report and agreed with it.
At one point, MP Millie Odhiambo shouted him down.
“The conversation should be about why the 16th Century inventions like wheelbarrows and Mkokoteni are still being used in the 21st Century,” he said.
As he expressed his reservations, he was forced to ensure jeers.
As he came to an end, the crowd jeered “respect the president”.
He tried to calm the crowd.
On the IEBC issue, Ruto said he was opposed to political parties appointing electoral commissioners.
“How fare will a league be, where a referee is appointed by teams, and not all the teams but some teams?” the DP posed.
“…unless you tell me that it is okay for some teams to appoint the referee…and if that is what you are saying, I have my reservation.” He said.
He said that the 2010 Constitution had made it clear that the police must act independently of any politician, whether they are in government or in the opposition.
