Former President Daniel Moi was on Thursday “killed” on social media.
From 10 am in the morning, Kenyans flooded Facebook, Twitter and different what’s app forums claiming the octogenarian had died at Nairobi Hospital.
However, the news turned out to be fake.
Moi’s Spokesperson Lee Njiru told Hot News that the family and friends of the former President were saddened by the fake news.
“I am the official channel of communication. If that information is not from the family or me, its hogwash. Those are busy bodies,” he said.
He said President Moi has children, grandchildren and hundreds of relatives who were affected by the fake news.
Lee Njiru called on Kenyans to respect Mzee Moi.
Moi Served as the second President of Kenya from 1978 to 2002.
After the news spread, blogger Robert Alai took to social media to clarify that Mzee Moi is not dead.
“President Moi is NOT dead though on life support. The Military at Lee Funeral home is taking the body of a retired commander who died recently. Bad people don’t die easily. It’s the funeral of the late Major Gen. (Rtd) Duncan Wachira.,” Alai posted.
However, there were mixed reactions on social media with many users condemning those spreading the fake news.
Earlier in the week, a section of the media reported that Moi is on life support at Nairobi Hospital after his lungs collapsed.
