A police officer shot a Jua Kali artisan in the chest on Thursday during a disagreement between interim officials of Kamukunji Jua Kali Association and former officials over proceeds from a public toilet.
According to James Mwaura, the interim chairman, about twelve police officers drawn from Shauri Moyo and Makongeni police stations stormed their offices Thursday morning.
They were led by a newly posted OCS at Shauri Moyo police station, and they attempted to arrest the toilet attendant when chaos erupted.
Denis Otieno was shot in the chest allegedly by a bullet fired by one of the officers.
He is now recuperating from home.
Contacted for comment Nairobi regional police boss Augustine Nthumbi referred this writer to area OCPD.
“Where is Kamukunji? Talk to the OCPD.” he said.
An artisan said Otieno was bleeding profusely.
“We rushed him to hospital although the police did not want us to take him.” Said an artisan who sought anonymity for fear of intimidation.
According to multiple sources at the association, the former leadership is accused of corruption and underhand business deals that only benefited the officials.
“The former officials were ejected from office by members for doing personal business in secrecy using the association’s resources.” Mwaura said.
According to a medical report dated April 29,2021, Otieno was treated at Morning Side Medical Clinic.
“On examination, he had a tear on his chest, bleeding profusely and in severe pain.” Reads the report in part.
The artisans have appealed for help from interior CS Fred Matiang’i and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to ensure justice is done.
