A team of philanthropists, donated food during the weekend to hundreds of needy households in Tana delta, Tana River county.
Speaking to Hot News, Yakub Shahid, a founding member of the team known as Feed A Family said they donated food portions to five hundred households on Saturday.
The team has traversed the country for the last ten years to donate food to vulnerable families.
Shahid said they target arid and semi-arid areas including North Eastern, Coast, Rift Valley, Eastern and parts of Central Kenya regions.
Yakub thanked his team members and their families as well as other well-wishers who have been supporting the exercise.
“We are targeting 2,500 more households in the next 10 days.” Yakub said.
In Tana River, the team decried poor roads that make it difficult to access targeted villages where they occasionally distribute food.
Yakub appealed to the county government to improve road networks.
He said the region is prone to perennial floods and urged the government to build foot bridges to avoid possible drowning of residents.
“We had to take a boat to reach the villages and after that we had to ride on a boda boda for half an hour to reach our des the village. The van carrying the food had to use a very long route to access the distribution point.” he said.
Yakub said the team is looking for partnerships to empower the poor communities and make them self-reliant.
“We intend to initiate income generating projects to uplift their livelihoods.” he said.
