Governor Joseph Ole Lenku and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga today landed in Narok County to whip grassroots leaders into the BBI debate ahead of a mega rally tomorrow-Saturday.
Governor Lenku arrived earlier and held meetings with local leaders bringing political allies and foes alike to strike a reconciliation tone ahead of the mega rally.
Before Mr Odinga’s arrival at 4 pm, Governor Lenku and his Narok counterpart Samuel Tunai, 15 MPs and more than 100 MCAs from across the Maa counties converged and engaged more than 3,000 delegates in analyzing provisions of the BBI report.
The emotive sessions saw grassroot members of the Maasai community call for a proper recognition and addressing of their age old land rights, promote Maa culture as a tool for economic empowerment, inclusion in top positions in government as well as conservation of water sources and sharing of natural resources.
They particularly said all natural resources such as Amboseli National Park should revert to County governments.
Delegates also called for inclusion of the minorities in available local political spaces to reduce ethnic antagonism.
A section of delegates lauded the choice of non Maasai as a Deputy Governor in Narok and several MP positions in both Narok and Kajiado counties.
However, a team of hardliners who attempted to advance the position that major seats in Maa counties should be left exclusively to the Maasai community attracted murmurs with the women leaders present castigating it as divisive.
