St Monica Chakol Girls from Teso South will send its swimming team to the Western Region Secondary Schools Sports Association Regional Games in Vihiga County starting March 18 after it qualified automatically.
The school Principal Sella Akech, who also doubles up as the swimming coach, said they qualified for the games since they do not have a competitor.
Addressing the press after the team’s training at Hotel Breeze in Busia Town, Akech said she decided to introduce swimming which is a good form of exercise.
“We don’t have a swimming pool but we have decided to use the facilities at the Breeze; we are training the girls and hope they will do their best and make Busia County proud,” she said.
The Principal who joined the school from St Monica Girls Kitale introduced swimming there.
“We have had to spend a little extra money so that we train the students. A student at Kabarnet High School whom I coached got a job with Kenya Navy; I hope this will also open avenues for our girls”. She said.
Akech said her father was a member of a club and whenever he visited the club, he went along with her thus she developed interest in swimming.
“In secondary school, I participated in the national swimming competitions. I was good in all strokes but my best was breast stroke, as well as butterfly” she said.
She said it’s her dream that leaders, parents or any school constructs a swimming pool noting that it’s not only a luxury but an important investment.
“One can stay afloat in the sea in case of emergency if they know how to swim,” she said.
