Busia County Secondary Schools hockey defending champions Butula Boys were upset 1-0 by St Paul’s Amukura High School (SPAHS).
This was on day one of the Term One Games at Mundika Primary School.
Last year’s runners up Kolanya Boys were held to a 1-1 draw by Nambale before trouncing Sigalame 3-0.
Hosts Mundika and Nambale battled to a 0-0 draw.
Hockey Girls defending champions Moding Girls got off to a fine start when they beat Nangina Girls 4-0 in pool B match played at Busia Polytechnic grounds.
Last year’s runners up Kolanya Girls had a good start, beating Chakol 2-0 in the opener.
Butula faltered in Rugby 15s going down 29-0 before recovering to beat Sigalame 5-0.
In other matches Kolanya Boys beat Lugulu 12-5 while St Paul’s Amukura High School and Nanderema drew 0-0.
Sigalame recovered to beat Mundika 5-0 in their second match.
Butula, the 2018 handball runners up were upset by Mundika 24-17.
Defending champions Kolanya beat Machakusi 20-14 with Namboboto beating St Mathias 20-17.
In the girls category Lwanya Girls beat Nanderema 13-6, Aboloi beat Busende 12-7, St Monica Chakol hammered Nambale Urban 19-1 while Bumala beat Makunda 11-5.
National Secondary Schools basketball losing finalists Sigalame High started their defense on a flying start when they hammered Nambale 68-10.
Siga as they are popularly known overcame their opponents with ease to put them in a pivotal position to retain the title they won last year after beating Butula High in the finals.
Madut Mayik was the top scorer for the victors with 14 points to his credit.
In the girls category title holders Kolanya Girls beat Chakol 31-5 to boost their chances of retaining the title.
Nangina beat Lwanya 21-2.
Sigalame Principal-cum coach Joseph Were was optimistic the team will go far in the tournament given their experience of qualifying for East African Games last year.
Butula Principal Daniel Ouma said despite making a false start they are optimistic of recovering their lost glory to stamp a mark in Rugby 7s, Hockey and Handball.
