Lukenya Academy yesterday won the Private and International Preps Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA) Swimming Championships.
The event was held over the weekend at Makini School.
38 teams showed their swimming prowess.
Despite the long break during the covid-19 pandemic, many swimmers outshined each other, and many personal best records were broken.
In the girls’ Individual medley under 7 years age category, Ashleyn Sheila from Rayfish swim club was position 1 with a time of 2.23.07 while Nailah Kagure from Hapoons swim club became second position with a personal best time of 2.31.74 and Mahera Elyse from Regis school clinched third position clocking 3.04.91
In the 14-15 years age group boys 25m backstroke, Myles Maina (Agakhan High school) Gabriel Mwanzia (Sunshine High school) and Miano Gathumbi (Lukenya School) took gold, silver, and bronze clocking 18.01, 18.23, and 20.71 respectively
The overall winners in the girls 10-11 years age group were Macrine Kalombo(Riara Schools) Cecilia Makau (Lukenya schools) and Sherry Odongo (Fusion swim club) garnering 28, 23, and 20 point respectively
The overall best team’s trophy went to Lukenya schools garnering 604 points while Dashing Dolphins swim club took the first runners up position with 431.50 points and Riara Primary school finished the podium becoming the second runner sup with 305 points.
When asked about their experience on the gala, most swimmers admitted that they were excited as they got an opportunity to compete after a very long break.
Mark Gaya, the PIPSSA media liaison officer expressed confidence that swimmers will go back to form and manage to qualify for the upcoming international meets as they continue to train and improve on their times.
He added that the gala was a qualifier to the upcoming PIPSSA National swimming championship that will be held in Mombasa in mid-February.
The PIPPSSA invitational swimming gala was sponsored by Moi Educational Center High school.
