Agriculture CS Peter Munya has told off a section of farmers from Trans Nzoia who have accused him of mismanaging Kenya Seed Company.
When reached for comment on the farmers concerns, CS Munya said “Those are cartels”
However, the farmers led by Peter Chemuigut said the minister should listen to them and address their concerns instead of labeling them “cartels”
On Sunday, the CS told Hot News that those who were complaining about how the seed firm is being managed are cartels who have been exploiting farmers.
The farmers said the Seed Company should not be run like a parastatal.
“We remain firm, and our stand is that the appointment of Fred Oloibe as the MD of the company did not follow due process,” said Peter Chemuigut.
Chemuigut, the immediate former ADC board member complained that the 50th AGM, which was held on March 26, was chaired by Engineer Stanley Kamau from the Ministry of Finance instead of a continuing director as provided in the Constitution of the company.
“I want to tell the Minister – Peter Munya openly that when we demand justice and objectivity, we don’t become cartels, this is a voice of Trans Nzoia farmers, and in case we are cartels, then you are a big cartel” Chemuigut said.
He insisted that the Seed Company should not be run like a Parastatal.
Chemuigut complained that the names of the new directors were supposed to be deposited with the registrar of companies and not being gazzetted by the ministry of Agriculture as was the case.
He added that Oloibe is not fit to be the Managing Director of the giant Seed Company since he is not competent.
Chemuigut said due process was not followed and that Munya influenced his appointment since Oloibe is his friend.
“We will be moving to Court to quash his appointment and seek orders to ensure the Ministry of agriculture doesn’t interfere with activities of Kenya Seed” he said.
Two weeks ago, Endebess MP Robert Pukose accused Munya of influencing the appointment of outsiders as directors of the company, doing away with stakeholders from Trans Nzoia, the headquarter of Kenya Seed.
Several farmers said since Oloibe was appointed, the market has been flooded with fake maize seeds and that this will lead to low yields.
