US President elect Joe Biden has called on outgoing president Donald Trump to respect and defend the American constitution.
Addressing the press at midnight Kenyan time and 4pm American time, Biden condemned Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol Hill and disrupted the vote verification.
He said he was shocked with the actions of the mob.
According to Reuters news agency, Protesters supporting Donald Trump swarmed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, putting it on lockdown.
The News agency reported that this happened as Vice President Mike Pence rebuffed the president’s demand to overturn his loss to Democrat Joe Biden and the Senate’s Republican leader denounced a bid in Congress to undo the election outcome.
Reuters said Trump supporters overturned barricades and clashed with police on the U.S. Capitol grounds and streamed inside the building.
Law enforcement authorities struggled to maintain order-Reuters said.
On twitter, Trump told his supporters the election was stolen.
“We don’t ant anybody hurt. Lets go home. It is a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We must have peace. Go home and go in peace” Trump asked his supporters to leave the Capitol Hill.
At one point, security guards drew guns to scare the protestors.
The National Guards were called in to help the local police restore order.
