The Burundian Government has moved the Country’s Capital City from Bujumbura to Gitega.
According to wikipedia, Gitega is the capital and one of the largest cities in Burundi.
It is in the Center of the country, in the Burundian central plateau roughly 62 kilometers southeast of Bujumbura.
Gitega was the seat of the Kingdom of Burundi until its abolition in 1966.
In late December 2018, Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economical capital and center of commerce.
A vote in Parliament made the change official on 16 January 2019, with all branches of Government expected to move in over three years.
According to several residents quoted by Al Jazeera TV, Bujumbura has been perceived as an opposition strong hold thus the need to move the Capital away.
Opposition leader Agathon Rwasa told Al Jazeera that Burundians were not consulted when the decision was made.
Gitega has less than 1 million people and is in Central Burundi.
It is expected that more people will be able to accesses Government services since Gitega is at the Centre.
