A “doctor” arrested for helping a woman abort in Githurai 44 on Wednesday night has been released by Kasarani police under unclear circumstances.
A source at the station privy to the matter said the woman who was arrested together with the “medic” has since been freed.
Contacted, Deputy Inspector General of police Edward Mbugua promised to follow up the matter.
The suspect Martin Kimani Mburu was arrested by undercover police officers from Kasarani police station.
He operates Helpers Clinic located in Githurai 44 next to where Prestige “Hospital” that was on the spotlight for conducting unsafe abortion was located.
The proprietor of Prestige Mugo Wa Wairimu was later arrested and the facility closed by health officials.
Mugo hit headlines in 2014 after an expose by a local television showed him allegedly sedating and raping female clients in the hospital before he treated them.
Detectives in the Company of Hot News Reporters found Kimani in the process of “treating “ his patient, a lady (name withheld) in her mid-twenties.
He denied that he procured an abortion and said he was treating the mother of two for “excessive bleeding.”
He said the clinic was not his and was just helping the owner who was away at the time.
“The client told me she had been bleeding for two days and she wanted help.” Kimani told Hot News and detectives.
The lady who was lying on the hospital bed in visible shock and pain said she is single and jobless.
She said she opted to terminate her two months pregnancy. “I paid him five thousand for his services and medication.” She said.
Unconfirmed reports from Githurai 44 residents who spoke to Hot News in confidence for fear of victimization said the clinic belongs to a doctor who works at Kenyatta National Hospital.
They said the Doctor enjoys protection from a senior police officer in Kasarani.
“This clinic is always flooded by women and young girls. You will rarely see men here.” A resident said.
Residents said the clinic is a beehive of activities in the evenings.
They want the clinic shut.
On Thursday night the “doctor” was still held at Kasarani and his phone was still on.
It is not clear if the medic is registered with the accrediting bodies.
Contacted to find out whether he was still in custody, he disconnected his phone and sent a text message, “You don’t know whom you’re talking to, keep to your lane.” The text read.
