Busia governor Sospeter Ojaamong has urged the National Government to devolve the National Cereals and Produce Boards.
Speaking to Hot News, he said each County should have its own cereals board and Kenya will be food secure.
Ojaamong said most Cereals boards including Malaba are not used for intended purposes of storing cereals, putting counties at greater risk when famine strikes.
“We need such silos, to revert to counties to enable us store cereals during glut, most agricultural experts are expected to monitor the moisture content to ensure they are not contaminated,” he said.
The Governor’s appeal came as the national government declared that 16 counties out of 47 are hunger stricken.
Ojaamong said the Council of Governors met with representatives of Members of County Assemblies where it was agreed they ensure at least 5 per cent of the budget goes to emergencies and disaster management.
However, the County CEO decried that the late release of funds from the exchequer affects the operations of the disaster management whenever there is an emergency.
