Former Minister and Funyula MP Paul Otuoma has been nominated by ODM to succeed Governor Sospeter Ojaamong in Busia County.
He got 49,330 votes against Mutua’s 30,696 in the ODM Primaries.
He defeated Mutua in all Sub Counties which are Teso North, Teso South, Nambale, Butula, Matayos, Funyula and Budalang’i.
The ODM Primaries were held on Monday.
He will now face off with Jubilee’s Lucas Meso, DAP Kenya’s Dan Mogoria, and Nambale MP John Bunyasi who is eyeing the governor seat on an ANC party ticket.
Otuoma who picked former Teso North MP Arthur Odera as his deputy on April 5 had technically banked on the former lawmaker to tilt the political tide in the constituency towards his side.
Mutua had earlier made inroads in Teso North but the Odera factor played a critical role in ensuring Otuoma receives a sizable number of votes in Teso North.
Mutua was left with only the Teso South sub-county as her stronghold.
Otuoma after his victory called on ODM members in the county to remain united and approach the August polls as one united team.
He said disunity may destabilize the party as he also begins the journey of campaigning for ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of the polls.
Catherine Omanyo won the ticket for the woman rep seat.
She garnered 29, 273 votes against her closest challenger Beatrice Nakhooli’s 17,641.
Pamela Riziki Adhiambo came in third position with 16, 219 votes as nominated MCA Cynthia Mutere scooped 8,691 votes.
Former Communication and ICT chief officer Lydia Nabwire came in the fifth position with 8,193 votes.
