The land on which more than 40 slaughterhouses stands on in Busia County has been secured.
In an executive order, Governor Ojaamong ordered that all slaughterhouses and slabs in the County be transferred to the Agriculture docket.
The slaughterhouses were in the department of Water, Irrigation, Environment and Natural Resources.
Several land grabbers were reportedly colluding with some County officers to grab the land.
The County Assembly of Busia on Tuesday adopted a resolution to have the slaughterhouse transferred to the Agriculture docket.
The assembly chaired by nominated MCA Nancy Okademi gave the Agriculture department exclusive task to develop a legal framework to govern the operations of county abattoirs within six months.
The motion had been moved by Agriculture committee chairman Joab Oteba.
In the report, the committee decried the poor hygienic conditions of the facilities.
The committee said most of them are not well secured, a factor that can lead the land they sit on to be grabbed.
Oteba in his contribution said the move to have the department of agriculture manage slaughterhouses and slabs will solve land disputes and other challenges that had crippled their operations.
“The department will be able to generate revenue for the County from over 40 slaughter houses operating in the county; the experts in the department will help in checking the spread of deadly diseases like anthrax through inspection of meat before being sold to the public,” he said.
The MCA said they are coming up with a Livestock Bill that will help in streamlining the livestock industry in the county.
