Over 3,300 farmers in Amukura Central Ward in Busia County have benefited from free maize seeds and lime from the County Government through the Ward Development Fund.
Area Member of the County Assembly Moses Ouma alias Baba kick started the exercise last Monday at Okatekok Sub location.
It moved to Kaliwa on Tuesday, Apatit on Wednesday, Katelenyang’ on Thursday before concluding at Apokor on Friday.
The farmers received the DH04 seeds, an early maturing variety supplied by Kitale-based Kenya Seed Company.
The variety takes 65 days from planting to harvest.
Baba said he opted to supply lime to farmers to correct on soil acidity which is rampant in the area.
The MCA cautioned farmers against selling their produce moments after harvesting and later buying the same from unscrupulous traders during hunger at exorbitant prices.
” With the invasion of the desert locusts into the neighboring Bungoma County, lets be careful because tomorrow locusts will be here. I want to caution you to hold on before you embark on the planting exercise,” he told farmers.
Due to high demand, Ouma said he will increase the number of beneficiaries to at least 5000 next seasons.
