Students of Limuru International School have managed to plant 5,000 trees this term.
The students have achieved the fete with the support of the School Director David Mwangi Ndegwa .
The initiative was started in February.
“The trees have been planted on 63 hectares piece of land. We knew as a school that the trees replenish groundwater and filter the air from harmful pollutants and odors. In addition, this is part of Competence Based Curriculum (CBC). We are supporting the government’s initiative” Ndegwa said.
He added that he is opposed to the School having a tea plantation like the neighborhood
Tea is grown around Limuru.
The older trees have acted as catchment area to a local stream and a beautiful waterfall has been created as a result of another stream flowing through the school.
The Director added that the School wants to set the record as the one that will plant the most trees in the Country.
“We will be an example to emulate, in the next two years, it will be a different story altogether. I am confident we will achieve plans to plant a million trees “he told Hot News.
He said he noticed that many students do not know how to plant trees and that this motivated him to teach them.
Ndegwa said he ensured the students are taught about environmental conservation.
However, he regretted that lack of land in Urban areas hinders planting of trees.
12 year old Javan Ford, a student at the schools said that Trees are beneficial for every life form on earth.
Without them, the survival on earth is difficult and after some time, every species starts to die because of lack of oxygen.
“To save our lives, we must plant trees,” he said.
The students said they look forward to enjoying siting under the trees in future.
