The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is investigating massive fraud in Kirinyaga County Assembly.
After a visit to the Assembly on Tuesday, the DCI has instituted investigations into fraudulent payments made by the County Assembly to County employees.
According to the DCI, the fraud has been carried out since 2016.
In a letter sent to the Assembly, the officers are looking into the Assembly for suspected gross misappropriation of funds allocated to building the County Assembly chambers.
The DCI ambushed the County Assembly staff at 10am on Tuesday, in efforts to retrieve key documents to aid the investigations.
Sources indicate that the DCI has in the recent past gathered evidence that some of the Kirinyaga MCAs have been diverting funds allocated to building the Chamber to personal bank accounts.
The scandal is said to have contributed to the resignation of former Speaker David Githanda, who allegedly chose to resign and not be part of such scandals.
Mr Githanda resigned on July 30th, 2019, citing ‘personal reasons’ in a notice addressed to the Governor Anne Waiguru.
At the center of this heist is Majority Leader Kamau Murango, who oversaw the ousting of heads of key House committees in August last year.
Sources close to the County Assembly Office indicate that the vocal MCAs colluded to steal money that was earmarked for renovations of the County Assembly Chambers.
