Deputy Governors have demanded integration of their offices within the laws that strengthen devolution.
Taita Taveta deputy Governor Majala Mlagui has said.
She was speaking in Mombasa during a Validation workshop for the county government (amendment) bill and the inter-governmental relations (amendment) bill 2019.
“It is the concerned view of the Deputy Governors Forum where I hold the position of secretary, that Deputy Governors must be included in laws enhancing devolution as envisaged by the Constitution of Kenya 2010,” she said.
She said that as selected officials, their main role is Principal Assistants to the Governors.
Mlagui added that the laws should recognize their involvement in various devolved structures and organs being established.
The laws are undergoing the process of amendment based on the experiences gained through the last seven years of devolution.
Devolution affairs Director Alphonse Omunyali from the office of the PS Ministry of Devolution said that the laws are undergoing a complete overhaul.
“The laws were made in projection to devolution. Now we are in the process of amending the devolution laws based on the experiences we have since inception.” Omunyali said.
He added that a lot has been achieved through devolution in Kenya.
“The ministry has no interest working against devolution. We are working on correcting weaknesses in devolution,” he said.
Taita Taveta County Public Service Board Chair Tangai Ngoma and other officials from his office are among the participants at the forum.
The forum has brought together officials from the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani , Kajiado, Kitui and Makueni counties.
