Persons living with disability in Nairobi have petitioned Governor Mike Sonko’s administration to compel all landlords and building owners to ensure all buildings are accessible by people living with disability.
Led by Jacob Musango who is the chairman of the disabled people in Nairobi and Gilbert Ogonda the disabled representative from Mathare North, said they are not being involved in key decision making in the County.
They sent their petition through the Nairobi City County Assembly Labor Committee.
They said they want the County government to ensure they can access all buildings within the city.
“We want a front desk to serve our interests at the County,”
They also want the establishment of a special board for people with disability as provided for in the Nairobi City County Act, 2015.
In the petition, they want the establishment of a special needs bursary fund for schools from lower primary to University.
Labor committee chairman Peter Wanyoike who received the petition together with other committee members promised to ensure that their concerns are addressed.
“We will try as much as possible to ensure that disabled people in Nairobi are treated just like the rest of the residents,” Wanyoike said.
