The resignation of Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has gotten her enemies and political opponents off-guard.
The Speaker resigned on Tuesday morning citing a hostile working environment.
She said she is leaving City Hall with her head “high”.
One of her aides said she does not want to ruin her political career.
She leaves the seat to Deputy Speaker and Ruai MCA John Kamangu.
In 2017, Elachi vied for the Dagoreti North Parliamentary Seat on a Jubilee ticket and lost to Simba Arati.
“I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta. For the last few days there have been life threatening incidences. I appoint my Deputy Speaker, John Kamangu as acting speaker,” Elachi said.
She thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving her the opportunity to serve the City residents.
She asked MCAs to support Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director-General Mohammed Badi.
She apologized to all those she wronged while on duty.
However, President Uhuru and Raila’s confidants who requested anonymity said they will push the President to have an ex-military man to take over as Speaker.
“If the ousted Clerk Jacob Ngwele thinks he has won, he has not, we will have a very rough and tough guy take over. Elachi’s resignation is not good for them. Those who think they have won will have it rough,” said the man who has close links at State House.
