Residents of Karen area in Nairobi want the Nairobi County Government to increase the number of garbage collection trucks in the area.
They said that there are not enough trucks for garbage collection.
Speaking during the World Clean Up Day, at Kenya Power Pension Fund Land in Karen, Rose Karobia a manager with Karen Lang’ata District Association (KLDA) said Karen is slowly losing its status as a leafy clean suburb.
“We are doing the clean up because the County has failed to do it. We are the residents and we are the ones who are affected by the dirt. We are partnering with corporates to adopt a bin. These bins will be managed by the County Government and KLDA,” she said.
She asked Governor Sonko to intervene, visit the area and see for himself how garbage is always piling up at Karen shopping Center for lack of trucks.
Karobia added that the bins will be branded with logos of different Companies for a year.
She asked Karen residents to always turn up in large numbers and not to allow outsiders to go and clean their areas.
“Most residents say they are always managing their dirt. They believe outsiders litter the area,” she said.
Several Corporates which included learning institutions like the Kenya School of Law turned up for the event.
Karen area is home to prominent personalities in Kenya including President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka , DP William Ruto among others.
