A man who has been campaigning against drug abuse and illicit brews in Kiambu County says his life is in danger.
Martin Kahungura told Hotnews he is living in fear as suspicious people have been trailing him on a motorbike on different occasions.
Kahungura said he has been reporting illicit brewers and drug dealers to authorities since last year.
He told Hotnews some people who are benefiting from the trade have threatened to kill him.
“I have been receiving anonymous calls where the callers demand that I compensate them huge sums of money or else they will behead me. They claim I killed their businesses “he said.
He has since reported the matter to the police.
The father of three says no amount of intimidation will stop him from fighting illicit brewers and drug traffickers in his community for the sake of future generations.
Embattled Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been fighting the menace with minimal success.
In February 2018 he launched a programme dubbed “Kaa Sober Campaign” loosely translated as “Be Sober Campaign” to fight illicit brews and drugs.
Waititu recruited about six thousand youths to join a cleanup exercise as well as destroying brewing dens.
The youths had been taking local illicit brews known as chang’aa and drugs which saw many of them die early.
The governor stopped the campaign after it was criticized as a waste of public resources.
Critics said the initiative was not subjected to public participation before it was rolled out.
