Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa has accused the NLC of favoring tycoons at the expense of locals whenever they deal with cases of historical injustices.
She said the commission has failed to execute its mandate and has been compromised by land grabbers and absentee land lords.
She also accused security personnel in Kilifi County of being compromised as they were normally harassing locals in their own lands using fake court orders.
The MP spoke during a crisis meeting at Kingston area in Kwachocha to ease tension caused by an attempt by a Malindi tycoon to forcefully evict over 600 families who occupy 30 acres allegedly belonging to a tycoon.
It’s alleged that the tycoon brought a fake court order that showed they had reached an agreement with the locals to allow him take over all parcels of land which were not developed.
“The NLC has not resolved anything in Malindi, Kilifi County and the Coast region at large. There are cases in which the land owners are Mijikenda who have lived for generations and are not given a chance to explain their grievances by the commission,” she said.
Jumwa said the NLC only listens to tycoons and land grabbers at the expense of locals and end up writing reports which recommend eviction of people.
Jumwa said Security teams led by Kilifi county Commissioner Magu Mutindika have been compromised by the tycoons.
“I have personally reviewed some of the orders and clearly found they are fake but if police are given little money due to their greediness they frustrate locals who have lived there for generations,” she said.
She condemned the recent Mtwapa shooting that led to the death of two children and vowed not to allow the locals to be intimidated.
Jumwa said the Mijikenda community will not accept to be squatters in their own land.
Christopher Mumba Kambi a resident at Kwa Chocha Kingston where there is a conflict between residents and a tycoon said the area has turned into a battle ground between police and the locals.
He said KPLC officers have also been compromised after they disconnected power in the entire Kinston area.
“The matter is in court and has not been heard. The tycoon brought an order directing him to take over the land which is still vacant,” he said
“We urge the government to intervene since we feel all government departments have been compromised by the tycoon, if the state cares for its people let them not wait for bloodshed then we see leaders trooping here.” he said.
He thanked the Malindi MP for convening the meeting to hear the grievances of the locals as she had helped restore calm
However he said the community will not allow the tycoon to take over the land and vowed to deal with anyone who will attempt to get into the area.
