Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and his nominated counterpart David Ole Sankok have asked all education stakeholders to ensure children with disability are admitted to any school.
The two MPs said it’s expensive and at times discriminating for disabled children to be taken to specialized schools.
They said all Kenyan children whether disabled or not should learn together.
They were speaking at this year’s Rotary Sunshine Rally at Jamhuri Show Grounds where they were chief guests.
“With the change in technology, we can create an environment where kids with disabilities can learn with others. Currently, most schools don’t have facilities that people with disabilities can access. We need to learn together –we need to integrate” Wanyonyi said.
He said all children should learn together in the normal school set up and not in special schools unless they have very severe disabilities.
Wanyonyi said there is need for the ministry of education to establish Integrated Education which is an education programme in which disabled children attend classes with normal children on either a part or full time basis.
He asked the private sector and the government to provide an environment for Persons living with Disability to access opportunities and be employed.
MP David Sankok said the Sunshine rally is held on Valentines Day to bring children with disabilities together in order to boost their self esteem by letting them feel loved and appreciated.
“Today is a day for interaction, dancing, eating together and more importantly sharing our abilities beyond challenges of disabilities,” Sankok said.
The Rotary club of Nairobi annually hosts a rally for physically and mentally challenged children at Jamuhuri Show ground.
The event brought together 7,000 children from 40 different schools and homes in and outside Nairobi for fun, games and entertainment.
Each Rotarian contributes Kshs 1000 towards this annual event.
