Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has called on the Ministries of Health and Education to close down Ukasi Girls High School.
The school is in Mwingi Central Constituency, Kitui County.
This is after 55 students and two teachers were hospitalized having contracted Covid-19.
The community and the school are terrified after the 55 got quarantined at the school precincts.
According to the MP, the total population of the institution is 350 and they are all at risk of testing positive as it’s a norm for students sharing stationeries and textbooks.
He said three students who were hospitalized have been discharged.
The MP said the total bill for those under quarantine has shot to shs 200,000.
“I’m appealing to the Ministry of Health to take swift measures to prevent further spread of the disease in Ukasi Girls High School. Kitui is second nationally in number of infections and there’s insufficiency of oxygen in county hospitals,” said Mulyungi.
Mulyungi has urged the ministry of health to conduct mass vaccination in Kitui schools for students, teachers, and non-teaching staffs.
“The Health CS George Magoha should consider closing Ukasi Girls. Let all those who have tested negative go home and those who test positive be retained in school for school for quarantine to prevent further spread to the parents and siblings,” he added.
He called on the county and national government to facilitate fumigation and sanitization booths in the school and community.
