The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has come under increased criticism and lack of support from City residents on the mode of its operations.
On Monday afternoon, NMS officers who were demolishing structures in Mkuru Kwa Reuben slums caused the death of one man.
This is after the structure they were bringing down collapsed and tumbled on a 38-year-old man.
The deceased was identified as Gabriel Maina a father of two.
4 people were injured and rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital.
13 others escaped with minor injuries.
Mkuru Kwa Reuben MCA Evans Otiso condemned NMS for causing the death.
Resident Joseph Karanja said the demolitions were being carried out to pave way for a road.
Karanja said the road will be constructed in Bantu area of Mkuru Kwa Reuben area.
He said NMS officers came two days ago before they started the demolition.
Karanja said the demolitions are always sanctioned by one “Major Njoroge”.
“Some of the residents were hired by NMS to help in the demolitions. They were bringing down a one storey iron sheet house. This is the one that tumbled and crashed on Gabriel Maina,” he said.
Karanja rejected what he called “militarization” of the City.
He said NMS officers use excessive force while carrying out their duties.
Karanja added that whenever NMS carries out its operations, hundreds of police officers and NYS personnel are always deployed.
