The Nairobi City County Government health sector has received a major boost after Governor Mike Sonko directed for diversion of the Sh96m “confidential budget” allocated to his office towards the health sector.
Governor Sonko has said his office won’t require the “confidential budget” which had been approved by the Nairobi City County Assembly for his office operations for the 2019/20 financial year.
The County chief has now directed that the funds be diverted to upgrade health facilities in Nairobi City.
”I want to say that although the Sh96 million “confidential budget” had been allocated for operational expenses in my office, I won’t utilize the funds. I now want the funds to be used to upgrade our health facilities across Nairobi,” he vowed.
Sonko had already indicated that he will only consume the funds in the Nairobi City County Government budget if he’s able to account for each and every coin to Nairobians.
In this financial year 2018-19, the office of the Governor had been allocated a total of Sh50 million in the confidential budget but the Governor never utilized the funds even for his operations.
“I won’t use even a penny of the confidential budget because I only want to spend what I can account for. Those spreading rumors to blackmail me should get their facts right,” he said.
