Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday told off Senators over calls to name a deputy.
Sonko was summoned by the Senate Committee on Devolution to explain why he has not named a deputy governor 15 months after Polycap Igathe resigned.
Sonko said the issue of his deputy is a ‘non issue’.
He told off the Senators adding that he will nominate a deputy only after the COUNTY Government (Amendment bill) 2017 is passed into law.
Nandi Senator Samson Chargei questioned Sonko why he has not fully constituted his cabinet.
Sonko told him off saying he his executive is fully constituted.
H e said he has always re-constituted his cabinet to get rid of the corrupt members.
“I have always dismissed the corrupt CEC’s. If any minister engages in corruption, I will sack him,” he said.
Sonko added that there is no law that compels him to do so.
He said even the Supreme Court advisory does not compel him to do so.
His deputy Plycarp Igathe quit City Hall on January 31st.
Igathe is now at Equity Bank as Managing director and chief executive officer.
During the session, Sonko also took issue with Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja of petitioning the Senate on the appointment of a deputy.
Sonko said Sakaja is using a wrong approach to get support since he wnt to be Governor in 2022.
However, Sakaja dismissed Sonko saying he has no interest of being Governor in 2022.
