Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is among global leaders nominated for the World Humanitarian Award, 2019.
The award, organized by the World Peace and Diplomacy Organization, recognizes world leaders and individuals who have an incredible record in humanitarian services.
The organization on Monday wrote to Sonko notifying him of his surprise nomination for the award.
The organization said Governor’s Sonko Rescue Team is one of the most recognized humanitarian outfits.
Sonko is the Good Deeds Ambassador for Kenya and has on many instances helped Kenyans and citizens in the East African region on humanitarian grounds.
“Greetings from World Peace and Diplomacy Organization. You would be pleased to know that your name has been recommended and nominated by the Board of Trustees & the Governing Council of World Peace & Diplomacy Organization for its very prestigious and coveted “World Humanitarian Awards 2019″.
“This is on account of your remarkable approach & illustrious vision for the humanitarian services that you initiated, especially the Sonko Rescue Team and many such other initiatives for the social welfare and global peace,” the statement from the organization read.
The prestigious title is conferred upon most eminent individuals who have worked diligently in their respective fields of expertise and are known for their humanitarian contributions in the society.
The governor has welcomed the nomination, noting that he will continue with his humanitarian initiatives across the country.
Sonko said the nomination is evident enough that humanity should be about uplifting the less fortunate in the society and reaching out to the needy.
“This is a major step in our efforts to help the needy and the less fortunate in the society. It gives us the impetus to keep moving and doing good to people in the society,” Sonko said.
The aim of WPDO is to propagate the need for global peace through as many like minded
peace advocates as possible who would work towards global peace building.
This year, Sonko distributed food to thousands of starving Turkana residents following the prolonged drought in the region.
The Governor is also widely celebrated in Kenya for taking legendary boxer Conjestina Achieng to a rehabilitation home in Diani, Kwale county.
Conjestina was struggling and had lost her memory after ending her successful boxing career.
Sonko also adopted a baby who was a victim of a terrorist attack in Likoni, Mombasa county.
The baby has a bullet in his head and the Governor oversaw its successful removal through a delicate surgery.
Sonko is now educating him and has given the baby’s biological father a job.
