Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has ordered his administration to revoke the ownership documents of a piece of land that was grabbed from the County government in 2016.
Speaking while presiding over the 1st graduation ceremony of Dandora Green light Vocational Centre, Sonko said he was shocked that the grabber went to court despite forging the ownership documents of the land in Dandora phase 1.
“When I examined the documents, the grabber claimed he was allocated the land in 2016 by Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa and Town Clerk Philip Kisia. We had neither Town Clerk nor Mayor in 2016. Nairobi had a Governor,” he said.
He said through lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, the County Government of Nairobi appealed the Court order given to the developer.
He said a warrant of arrest was issued and the grabbers were to be arrested but they are still on the run.
He called on the DCI to intervene and have all those who forged the land documents arrested and taken to court.
Sonko asked the County Chief officer for Trade to ensure he aligns the sectors budget and allocates money for the construction of the market.
He said if there is no money, City MCAs should ensure it’s included in the supplementary budget.
“I want a new market to be constructed here in Dandora where we have repossessed a grabbed piece public land from a private developer. The private developer was illegally given an allotment letter by the previous regime, but I have instructed my Lands CEC Charles Kerich to revoke that allotment letter to pave way for construction of the market,” he insisted.
The Sonko administration is currently constructing City Park and Mwariro Markets.
In addition Sonko directed Trade and Commerce Executive Member Alan Igambi to ensure traders whose kiosks were destroyed to pave way for construction of the new Dandora Stadium get free modern shops in the complex.
Sonko said the traders will be given first priority in the allocation of stalls at the modern stadium which will be officially opened in August.
“I want all the traders who were displaced by our project to be given first priority during allocation of stalls at the,” he added.
Igambi said that he has initiated the process after meeting the area MCA and some of the traders to speed up the exercise as instructed by the Governor.
“I have already initiated the process and by next Week, we will brief the governor about the findings. This will be a big achievement to the locals, ”he said
Nairobi County Trade Chief Officer Fred Nzioka said the construction of the new Dandora market will start soon.
“As instructed by the Governor we are going to reallocate funds in our department and ensure the market is constructed. I also want to assure the traders who were operating at Dandora stadium that they’ll get allocation of stalls once the Governor officially opens the stadium,” Nzioki said.
