Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said he is ready to allow the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development to take over the “building plans approvals “from City Hall.
Sonko said its inhuman to allow people to die as a result of buildings collapsing within the City.
He said there are talks and plans to have the functions transferred to the National Government since the County Government has failed.
Sonko said Cartels are fighting back after he sacked 16 officials whom he blamed for the death of 8 pupils from Precious Talent Academy.
A floor at the school located in Dagoreti caved in and hundreds of pupils were injured.
Sonko latter sacked a total of 16 officials led by CEC Charles Kerich who was the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Finance and Economic Planning and immediate former CECM for Lands and Urban Planning.
He also sent parking Mohammed Dagane – CEC Health (responsible for general public health and safety) and Justus Kathenge, suspended County Chief Officer for Urban Planning (to continue in suspension).
Sonko asked President Uhuru Kenyatta for help to dismantle the Cartels.
“The work of approving building plans lies with the County Government. If the County officials did their work well, no one would have died. I sacked them so that we do not lose more lives, “he told President Uhuru Kenyatta during the commissioning of the Nairobi Express Way in Mlolongo.
He said the Cartels are now fighting back and are responsible for the chaos witnessed at City Hall.
