BY GOVERNOR MIKE SONKO
Earlier today, a delegation of cardiologists from the United Kingdom was received at my Upperhill Private Office, where we had discussions that are aimed at developing a partnership to establish the first of its kind Cardiology Clinic and Training Centre in a public hospital.
Currently, Kenya has only 29 cardiologists against a population of close to 50 million, making it completely impossible for these professionals to serve as per the WHO standards.
As a result, many Kenyans die each year from cardiovascular diseases and conditions that could be treated or managed if we had more trained personnel and facilities, since a majority of the current specialists are in private hospitals where the consultation and treatment costs are out of reach for most Kenyans.
Before establishing the Clinic and Training Centre, the team committed to facilitate training of our personnel at no cost to enhance current capacity, while offering free cardiovascular treatment abroad for select patients.
Later, the delegation was taken on an extensive tour of the Mbagathi Hospital where the proposed Training Centre will be established.
The team was led by Dr. Raffi Kaprielian and Dr. Nickolaos Pantazopoulos of the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital London, Juan Xu of London Medical Training, and was received by Dr. Karani Murimi of Mbagathi Hospital
