Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has warned that he will not pay any company that did not supply goods to City Hall.
This is after several companies went to court and claimed they supplied goods to City Hall, yet they didn’t.
“I won’t pay for air” Sonko Said.
Sonko said Proland Ltd is behind the loss of Sh175 million at the County after it was paid for unsupplied goods.
“There is a cartel called PROLAND owned by Mr. Fredrick Mungai, which recorded a consent with Nairobi County during the previous administration to be paid Sh35 million for nothing. The firm has so far been paid Sh175 million and they are now demanding for more money from the county,” said Sonko.
Governor Sonko also pointed out the misuse of police officers who gang up with cartels from the previous regime to defraud the county of its hard-earned revenue.
He was speaking at City Hall when plain cloth police officers stormed the Finance Department to arrest top County Finance officers over the Proland case.
Sonko said some police officers have ganged up with cartels to intimidate county workers who have refused to collaborate with rogue suppliers.
“Every time these cartels come with police officers, arrest our finance staff and force them to pay more millions at the expense of taxpayers, so far they have already been paid Sh175 million for supplying air,” Sonko said.
The governor said records available show the same company was paid over Sh50 million by the Kidero administration.
Sonko vowed to use all means to prevent the cartels from “stealing taxpayers’ money”
“They were paid over Sh50 Million during the previous administration for supplying nothing, but as long as I am the Governor of Nairobi City, I will not let the cartels steal county money,” he said.
