7 members of the Sonko Rescue Team distributing food to residents of Kariobangi North Sewerage area were arrested on Tuesday for idling.
Police said they were idling in public and failing to maintain physical distance of not less than one meter from each other.
The charge sheet said the seven failed to adhere to the Coid19 protocols contrary to No 6 (1) (a) as read with rule NO 11 of the Public Health Covid-19 restrictions on movement of persons and related measures rules 2020 legal notice no 50 of 2020.
The seven are Joel Njiri, Brian Kiogora, Charles Ndungu, Joseph Omondi, Wilson Mwangi, Swaleh Ogweno and Peter Kimingi.
They were charged in court and released after paying a fine of shs 500.
Kariobangi North MCA Julius Maina Njoka condemned the arrest.
He said its wrong to arrest SRT members who were distributing utensils, beddings, foodstuffs, tents, sanitary pads, sanitizers, masks, and Sh 1000 to victims of recent Kariobangi North demolitions.
Over 5000 people were evicted by police from the Nairobi Water and Sewerage company land.
They were squatters on the land.
Governor Sonko condemned Government officials who he said were playing politics with lives of vulnerable Kenyans spending the nights in the cold.
“The SRT will look for houses for these victims and pay their rent for six months,” Sonko said.
Sonko also vowed to be donating food to the evictees on a weekly basis until the end of Covid-19.
Governor Sonko’s spokesperson Ben Mulwa wondered why the National Government ordered the demolition of the resident’s houses, yet the world is facing a pandemic.
