The County Government of Taita Taveta and the Export Processing Zone Authority have partnered to set up a Processing Zone in Voi.
Governor Granton Samboja said the entity will create jobs for the area youths.
Speaking in his office in Mwatate during a meeting with officials from the EPZA, Samboja said the Zone will also improve the economy of the area.
“This initiative is a catalyst towards experiencing innovations and industrialization. Creating synergies with like-minded partners and open doors to serious opportunities,” the Governor stated.
Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui echoed the Governor’s sentiments adding that the EPZA partnership will help harness the rich resources of Taita Taveta County.
EPZA CEO Henry Obino said that such joint initiatives stimulate domestic and foreign investments.
“The EPZ program is aimed at facilitating export-oriented investments by stimulating domestic and foreign investments in the area of manufacturing, commercial and service activities. As a promotional program, it seeks to promote and diversify exports by moving away from traditional to value –added products” he said.
Obino said the EPZA program seeks to develop public infrastructure through the development of public industrial zones such as the intended Voi EPZ.
He added that technological innovations and skill transfer will ensure products attain international standards.
A 200-acre land has already been identified for the project.
The Governor later took the delegation on a site visit to the proposed land for the Voi EPZ at Ndii.
Technical teams from the County Government and the EPZA will fast track the process.
In attendance were General Managers John Akara, Benjamin Chesang, Peter Wainaina, CEC in charge of Trade, Tourism, Industrialization and Co-operatives Vumi Ringo, CEC in charge of Finance Andrew Kubo, CEC Land Mwandawiro Mghanga among other senior County officials.
