Chaos broke out on Saturday evening in Mradi area in Utawala when Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and his team who were touring the area were attacked by supporters of Embakasi MCA Michael Ogada.
Everybody took to their heels as rowdy youths from both sides hurled stones at each other and exchanged blows.
Babu Owino’s group managed to repulse Ogada’s men.
Michael Ogada Okumu has joined the race and wants to unseat Babu Owino from the Embakasi parliamentary seat.
Babu Owino has vowed to retain the seat.
Speaking to Hot News, Owino accused the Ward rep of starting the violence.
“We were on a peaceful tour of the area inspecting various projects. I visited Mr Kanywa’s pool and played pool with the local youth. Then I proceeded to greet women and find out how they are faring,” the MP said.
Owino added that his peaceful tour with his supporters who numbered about 500 people was cut short when Ogada and his group who were about 20-30 men accosted them.
“We beat them up, however unlucky for us, they managed to stone one of our cars which was behind. They were just a handful of people,” he said.
Several people were injured during the melee as everybody scampered for safety.
Babu wondered why Ogada went to Utawala Ward to cause violence.
Utawala MCA John Karani’s vehicle was also damaged.
Babu on his part, accused the MCA of grabbing public land in the Constituency.
“Ogada has grabbed a parcel of land in Mradi area. The land was meant for a school. He has built a rental apartment on it. The other land he has grabbed is the one in Tassia. It belongs to NSSF,” Babu said.
He called on the EACC to investigate the Ward Rep.
Several residents who were interviewed said Ogada has done nothing for them in the 20 years he has been a councilor then MCA.
Ogada could not be reached for comment since he did not respond to text messages and calls made to his phone.
Embakasi OCPD John Nyamu, his OCS and area DCIO did not also respond to messages and calls.
Ogada served as Councilor in the defunct Nairobi City County Council and is the current MCA for Embakasi Ward.
Owino called for his immediate arrest and arraignment in court
